TVM: Noted film actor Jagannatha Varma died here Tuesday. He was 77. He died at a private hospital in the capital city where he was undergoing treatment for old age ailments. Cremation will take place later.
He was active in the Malayalam film industry for three and a half decades. He was born to Thekkedathu Kovilakam Kerala Varma Thampuran and Kattunkal Kovilakam Ambalika at Varanad, Cherthala, Kerala. He started his film career through A Beem Singh’s Mattoli. He has acted in more than hundred films including Nakshathrangale Sakshi, Anthapuram, Sreekrishnaparanthu, New Delhi etc. He has acted in almost 190 films.
Varma joined the Kerala Police Force in 1963, before getting active in movies. He retired from Kerala Police as Superintendent of police. He was also an accomplished Kathakali artist and has shared stages with noted actors. He mastered the art from Pallippuram Gopalan Nair Asan. He was also a percussionist, learned the art from Kalamandalam Raman Namboothiri.
He leaves behind his wife Santha Varma from Anjerimadom, Thrissur. The couple have a son Manu Varma, an accomplished television actor, and a daughter Priya. Famous Malayalam movie director Viji Thampi is his son-in-law.
